Still debating the 4 legs/2 wings 2 legs/2 wings structure of my butterfly dragons. I think I'm leaning toward the 2/2 but even if I go 4/2, the front limbs will be t-rex small. This looks best in the air, which is where they'd be doing most of their fighting, hunting, general awesomeness from. However on ground is kinda awkward. For now I'm going with a gorilla sort of approach, with the creature walking on the knuckles of it's wings since they're pretty muscular limbs and could probably support it on the ground if it can support it in the air.

Yeah... I've thought about this way to much, lol.

I forgot it's antennae :-(

Roll Tide (Hans Zimmer) - A very epical (I love my made up words!), score piece from the film Crimson Tide. The first half of it just keeps building and building in a very Zimmer mannner, but it's more melodic then some of his later stuff.

I think you should stick with small front legs, if he's supposed to be quite elegant, otherwise on the ground he would be clumsy :) I dunno what you're aiming for, though.

Butterfly dragon = <33

Aww man, Hans Zimmer is one of my favourite composers of all time....I love the POTC2 soundtrack especially :D Roll Tide is beautiful....I haven't seen the film, but I must go and see it now D:

Its not Hans Zimmer, but have you heard the Halo soundtrack? It's awesome. It's very epic and kind of abstract, and I really reccommend it :)

Good song choice. The soundtrack for that movie is just plain old fantastic. :)

I think about everything way too much too. It makes for a really detailed, thought-out character though, Aye?

Walking on your knuckles sound painful. You horrible dragon abuser! Buy the poor thing a wheel chair!

Its all bony and old-person-like..old bony-people-hands shouldn't have to walk on their knuckles. =0

Scary, i actually found myself thinking about the 2x2 or the 2x4 some today, and i was picturing the 2x4 with a smaller "t-rex"-like front set of arms. Heh, either way, i can see the 2x4 being a problem on the ground. The frontal knuckles concept could go over very well. The one in the picture above seems to be in more of a relaxed mood, so the wings are more spread out and relaxed. I tried to picture it walking/ even running. I can see the wings being folded up even tighter in motion mode, like a Praying mantise (if a PM had a set of hands folded under and the claws were actually its wings. Kinda like a scythe with the butt of the blade being the knuckles and the blade running back and up). It'd be pretty cool if it could really use those folded up "scythe-like" wings on the ground as a defense mechanism. Just thinking outloud :) Oh, and gorilla knuckles seem to be pretty meaty. So maybe meater knuckles for convincible upperbody support? eh, whatever works.

I like this way. The extra set of front limbs would make them less streamlined and a bit more clumsy-looking.

This dragon looks good even without the antennae! ^_^

I've been trying to write a fantasy novel about the first meeting between humans and dragons, and I want to include about ten illustrations. I spotted your book "DragonArt" at a craft store today, and it's almost like God walked me over to the art book aisle and said "Here Scott, flip through THIS." My wife only saw the *look* on my face, and she told me to buy it.

I didn't have a template until now. (The Boris Vallejo/Hildebrandt/Ciruelo styles don't quite work for me.) THANK YOU!!! All that's left is to adapt your examples to what I had in mind for a "Western" dragon. For the part of the story that happens in China, I'll work on the "Eastern" dragon style. (I think we've wandered into Kung Fu.)

Thanks again. After two-plus years, my frustration is over.

Awesome dragons! Isn't a two legged dragon suppose to walk on it's knuckles? Well that's how I imagine them since that's how bats kinda walk. Anyways, I wish I could draw like you and I hope I can become friends with you! -DeviantArt JuggernautGrim-

It must be nice to be able to draw critters that don't look like the offspring of five monkeys having buttsex with a fish-squirrel. |:P Tehehehe...I love it. But you know, I think it'll try to bite me if I feed it a guava...o.o

I found something on the internet that I thought I would bring to your attention. I couldn't find an E-mail address, so I figure that this will probably work just as well o_o;

Someone posted a fanart of Timescapes on Gaia without crediting you as the creator of the characters or making any effort to state that the characters pictured did not belong to him.

Keee, just thought I'd point it out. Sorry to bother you o.o;

Random observation:
if you go with the 2leg/2wing structure (which I think is more anatomically and biologically correct, having 4 limbs instead of 6... if you're going for more realistic dragons that is), then you might want to make the knuckles be a bit bigger, as to support the dragon. Right now I'm afraid that they'll break!!!

Keep up the most excellent drawing, it's always a party when I see you've updated your livejournal! :D
