Half finished
I have a few half finished sketches, but nothing substantial. This is upsetting for the daily sketch effort. I'm going to try to get back into it. It's only mid January! The resolution cannot fail so soon! I am better then this! ...I hope.

Here's something (it's actually quite a bit farther along then in this scan- but lazy-) that I've been working on. Attempt like 20something at a cover for book 2. If it's hard to tell what's going on, don't ask me, cause ah- I have no clue... I'm takin' this as it goes... and er... it goes. My cunning plan is just to pack in so much detail, you don't notice the lack of composition or understanding of anatomy...

I started coloring the dragon for the layout. He's going to be adorning the menu of most of the main site. I'm going to have to look at the little guy on some other moniters. I know that the one i work on is very bright and let's me see "black" in all different shades of grey, but when I look at the same artwork on other moniters, it's just covered in black tar. I hope this is not the case with this one, because I'm very fond of him right now. Just gotta give the rest of his body the same treatment as the head. Been about a year since I've done coloring under pencils instead of inks.

I also gave my LJ a bit of a facelift. It's like a lovechild between the upcoming NDA layout and LJ's default layout. Dunno if I like it yet. >>;

Music Share
Zero - (Ace Combat 5) A really keen bit of game score music that's mix of several different genres, going from something actioney and tense, to something almost salsa sounding, then to something that sounds like a soviet anthem. It's odd, but works!

People never sell monitors at garage sales around here! I've looked! I just try hard not to color things too too dark, but this little guy looked so good in the dark grays. I just hope it translates '~'

*points* One day, one day I will have money on me and I will catch you while you're taking commissions, and I will pay you for art *nodnodnod*

Btw, just letting you know, I've had my (LCD) monitor callibrated with a Spyder and the colouration on the dragon is nice and well-varied, so s'all good on this end :)

I always enjoy your dragons, though I can't seem to point out anything specific I like about them. I also like the amount of detail on that armour, it is indeed most distracting, but not distracting enough that I wondered what was going on with that girls ear :) Though you did say that you've made some progress on it from that scan, so you've probably corrected it anyway, unless her ear is intentionally like that. :)

Hee hee. Haven't corrected it yet, but yeah, the ear's a little bit low and funky. THanks for pointing it out. I think I overlooked it in my haste to draw "woosh" hair.

"Woosh" hair is accountable for so many errors. It's why I had to start drawing heads first then going back to add hair once I knew my people weren't horribly deformed, though sometimes this means they end up with Big Hair instead :D

Your sketches are awesome! I wish my finished works looked that clean *___* And I just love your dragons, especially the fluffy ones. The armor design for the guy is simply fantastic.

Yeah, I hate it when you really like/work really hard on something, then you go look at it on another monitor and it's black tar. My monitor is on the bright side, but before it was too dark. Even referencing other monitors I still can't find a decent medium @_@ The colors on the dragon look good on my monitor though, possibly on a tad dark side.

For what it's worth I've never had that problem viewing your art, but I'm on a really bright monitor, so I really never have the black tar problem when viewing... just creating.

I also noticed something about printing. If it goes off to a printer for books or business cards or prints and the like, it always comes back with the "dark monitor" look, all black tar where there used to be nice gray. But off a home printer (which print from my monitor) I can still see all the variations. The fun of inkjet vs. CYMK I guess :-/

Ah the fun of printing x.x Even with different inkjets it can be such a hassle, let alone having to deal with CYMK and publications.

Hey Neon.... I have to ask: are you ever going to put out a book or tutorial on just outfits? I don't know how you and some of the other fantasy artists I admire make such unique, beautiful designs for clothing and armor. Do you have any good references you could name - book resources or anything that you find inspiration from?

I discovered a secret for fun ornamentation: If you make a weird shape then mirror it on the other side... it look fancy :-D

As for inspiration, I usually draw armor from my head, but I play a heck of a lot of world of warcraft and final fantasy. I also surf deviantart more then I should. I'm sure that this combined bleeds through into my art. After I finished it (wasn't intentional) I realized that this little guy's chest piece is VERY similar to Balthier's from FFXII. Kinda depressed me, because I was proud of it ;~;

Last but not least, big, random jewels everywhere. They're easy to draw, fun to color, and look hella impressive.

I don't know if it's my monitor or not but there seems to be a very odd texture on that dragon...it looks like a stone pathway or wall. If that's intentional I think I'd erase it from the under belly and just have the top area scaly...but hey, it's ur art and it's not finished yet so I'll shush XD

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]neondragon

Hee hee, That's actually a texture overlay I applied over the entire dragon to give him a little bit of grit. It's over his face too, but because of all the shading, isn't visible.

If it ends up being very prominate after I finish shading, I'll go in and erase a little bit of the texture. This is the third time I've grouped textures, so I'm still new at it.

Ah ha! Well with all the shading on the head you don't notice it so much so it should workout me thinks. Good luck :)
