Save Me From the Monster

You have to look at this for about 5 or 10 seconds to see that things are not always what they seem at first glance. I decided to take this image in a different direction then the cliche "you betrayed me first" angle. I decided that perhaps our little mermaid needed some hope of being saved, and who better to do that then a dragon? I mean, when I think of coolness and ultimate protection, I think dragon. It's a personal thing. When thinking of safety some people think knights in shining armor, some think their own personal arsenol of magical pwoers, some think big guns, I think dragons. It's just me! Yeah, and something monstrous being good and something beautiful being evil is all fun and dandy too.

I ramble.

This image ended up taking longer to finish then planned. Originally I was just going to slap on an abstract fun border background, which takes a half hour tops, but instead I photoshop drew a dragon and undersea environment. This stuff takes time to render!!! Anyhoo, it delayed my completion of the nightmare and fox fighters image. I hope to have that done soon.

In other news, my laptop is 100% useless. I thought since I could get the wacom tablet to make the arrow move in place of my missing mouse and touchpad, I would be set. It turns out that even the tablet is possed when plugged into that thing, so I can no longer take my coloring with me on trips. This is a shame, since I was planning on getting work done while manning my artist alley table at Otakon. :-(

I keep forgetting to share a Random Cool Image®.

Okay, I’ve been watching your progress on this piece and I wasn’t too emotional about it, yeah the guy stabbed her, okay but when I saw this I just squealed in joy for some reason! Yes, a dragon to save her! Awesome! I now officially love this piece. Glad you took the time to add the dragon, it MADE the image. This is the kind of art I just love, there is so much gong on, a real story being told. Bravo ^__^

I'm glad you like it! I'm a lot happier with it now. The original goal was pointless angst because it always sells well, but it never really made me happy. Dragons always make me happy :-D

First reaction: I litterally jumped. I knew you were going to do something different, as I saw your momentary post of "I'm doing something different"

Second reaction:
I thought that he had run her through, so that she'd be saved from the more vicious pain that was about to overwhelm them. Thus, what looks like a cold attack at first, was a move of pitty. They are both about to get eaten by something they could not win against, but he saves her from the toothy death about to attack them.

I didn't think of it as he still being the cold-blooded-attacker and her salvation beast of beauty.

I had the same interpretation when I first saw it. I thought it was a great twist on the character of the merman.

The eyes on that dragon are creeping me out... very scary.

Wow, I love how your changed the view of this pic with the dragon coming to save her o.o The tears coming from the dragon's eye are just lovely ;_; I also really like how the dragon glows from the inside.

I need to do more glowy dragons :3 Dragons glowing from the inside with the prospect of fire has always been cooler to me then actually seeing them belching out flames. :-/

so, if the tear-eyed dragon is coming to save her... does this mean she won't die??????

I don't want her to die...

it's so sad...

so many dying mermaids...

*sniff... sniff....*

Absoluetly. Stunning.

I've stared and stared and stared and I notice more and more little details here and there, like the tears in the dragon's eyes (as someone else pointed out).

Lovely...

In all honesty I liked it better before you added the dragon. To me it looks like she was going to the guy for protection. Her eyes are on him, so seems like the dragon is the problem. It doesn't help that it looks like he's about to take a bite out of her. >.> The face also looks kind of funky. The eyes don't appear to really be balanced. I mean if you're happy with it, that's great, but I think it was better before.

Well, if you don't like it, that's fine. Everyone has their own opinion. I wanted an image that made you look twice. All of the things that you pointed out are true, but I don't think

The dragon at first glance is the most obvious menace. Look at those teeth! However on further inspection he's screaming in anguish and is crying, not trying to attack the mermaid. She *is* looking to the merman with love/adoration, but look harder and the twist is that he is the monster. He's smiling as he kills her.

So yeah, everything you say is true, but that's how I wanted it to be. You have to fill in the blanks for to get the story, which I *personally* find a lot more intersting then "oh look, the merman stabbed the goo-goo eyes mermaid"

Oh, and about the face being wonkey; there's a ridge on his nose blocking half of the far away eye. (there's a matching ridge on the other side of the nose) It's not a tiny eye.

*nods* I know you were saying that he was the monster. Basically I think I decided early on that she had done something to deserve it. The way I filled in the story was that he was tired of being her protector. I don't know, just a different spin on it. On the other hand I tend to associate with Jack the Ripper more than Mary Jane Kelly or the others, so I think it's probably just personal.

The dragon's eye in the back seems to be smaller, by that I mean deformed. I know a little about proportions, but the eye in the back looks half closed, giving him a look like this: o.O

i must confess, it took me awhile to understand this picture.

at first I thought that the dragon and mer-man where connected at the tail, but then I saw that he stabbed her...and I was sad...

and the dragon looks as if hes crying...

It sound like your mouse/mouse like devices are not working? Have you tried a seiral mouse with your laptop? I don't know, it might not have ou but I allways find if ps/2 and USB fail seirial very rarly fails. Also if you only have a USB mouse I think you could put in am PCMIA USB card and try to use that. Also it migt be a few corrupt drivers are playing with you, You may need to reinstall the drivers for your laptop's motherboard and over-write the corrupt files, There might even be newer drivers for it on the manufacturer's website. Let me know if any of this helps or if I was compleatly off the problem.

Very nice, I belive my knight in shinning armor is a dragon too ;) (my friend thinks I am crazy cuz I say /I'm/ a dragon :snickers: )

She does look like she was looking to him for comfort, But the stab wound and sword effect is a bit odd.. I dunno.. I was thinking you were going to have blood swirling from the front of her (Which is where I assumed he pulled it out from) to the blades tip...

Not that I am telling you what to do!! (It should be vice versa ^^)
I like the dragon.. I had to look at this pix for a long tyme to make things out, which makes a pix that more interesting!

Good work!
I would sell ya my mom's laptop if she had'nt dropped it and cracked the screen.. =\

How much did your tablet cost you? I have always wanted one of those...
